Tax and Equality - or Inequality?

  • Rutherford House Lecture Theatre 3, Pipitea Campus, VUW (map)

Should equality, and the reduction of inequalities, be a fundamental principle of our tax system? What would that actually mean: what difference would it make to our present system? Is there any difference between the goals of ‘equality’ and ‘fairness’? Our political parties will be hotly debating ideas on tax over the next year: will their policies reduce or worsen inequality – and what other, better ideas might be out there? IGPS senior associate Max Rashbrooke will talk about his vision for the design of the tax system, and set the scene for election year.
